Join us for a presentation and discussion entitled “The History of Race and the Ideology of Superiority.”

On Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Virginia Room, sociology professor Dr. Casey Welch and communication professor Dr. Kristine Warrenburg will give short presentations on how the idea of race emerged and changed over the course of history. Following the presentations, the event will open up into a discussion on the many facets of race. Depending on direction of the conversation, we may cover historical measures of race, legal definitions of race, and the effects of race on both minority and majority groups.

Mock Legislative Debates

In a series of mock legislative debates, students will research and work with legislators on controversial real-world issues.

Participating students will research controversial issues and submit papers that objectively address multiple sides of the dispute. Topics include free speech, prostitution, water conservation, welfare, eugenics and capital punishment.

Then students receive a proposed statute related to the issue, and they will take one side and engage in a partisan debate, either endorsing or opposing the bill. Prior to this Mock Legislative Debate, they will have received training from a former member of Florida’s congress.

The debates are open to the public and will take place April 13 and 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m and April 20 from 8 to 9 :45 a.m. The location of this program has not been announced.
