The ‘Good Life’ Learning Community’s ‘Free Compliments Project’
October 27, 2009 by admin
The “Good Life” Learning Community, taught by Professor Roger Bradley (ECO 201), Professor Judith Burdan (ENG 171), and Professor Art Vanden Houten (POS 203), has been exploring the subject of the “good life” from a variety of perspectives.
In ENG 171, we read a selection of personal essays from the collection “This I Believe.” One of those essays, “Good Can Be As Communicable As Evil,” asserts that with small positive gestures we can help to make life better for each other. Reading that essay led to our “Free Compliments Project.”
For three consecutive Wednesdays, groups of students (our LC members are Kaela Amenta, Christina Bailey, Victoria Henderson, Olivia Higgins, Sarah Kirgis, Rebecca Lopez, Casey Pierce, Andrew Roman, Maddy Tavares, Aaron Turner, Marcia Vojcsik and Jessica Windisch) positioned themselves around campus and for an hour or so gave out free compliments to whoever walked by, making a small positive gesture toward building the “good life” at Flagler.
The experience was well-received by all involved.
“I think that the little things in life are what matter most, and giving out ‘free compliments’ to our fellow students and staff members is a great way to brighten up anyone’s day,” LC student Maddy Tavares said.
