What Is Ignite?
Ignite is a Flagler College initiative to spark student engagement through first-year learning communities. Two Flagler learning communities are launching during the Fall 2008 semester, and the 40 freshman participating in them are getting some exciting opportunities.
For the first semester, the learning communities will study the theme of “Understanding Power” through English, government, and art classes. They’ll take field trips together, work on special projects, meet at gatherings – overall, they’ll have a unique experience designed to get them involved with their education.
The Ignite learning communities are a proven way to strengthen what Flagler College is already known for: providing students with a learning environment that’s both supportive and challenging. Research on learning communities shows they improve student success rates in college. The classes are designed to:
- involve students in their education, encouraging them to pursue meaningful academic challenges
- foster a sense of community and shared purpose among students and instructors
- create deeper learning by developing problem-solving and self-reflection skills
Ignite is also known as Flagler College’s Quality Enhancement Plan. The QEP calls for Flagler to expand its number of first-year learning communities; within five years, all incoming freshman will be participating in Ignite.
